If you’ve been researching mineral sunscreens, you’ve probably seen the term “non-nano zinc oxide.” But what does it mean, and why is it so important for your health and the environment?
Nano vs. Non-Nano:
Nano zinc oxide particles are so small they can potentially penetrate the skin or be inhaled (in sprays or powders), raising safety concerns.
Non-nano zinc oxide uses larger particles that sit on the skin, reflecting UV light safely and effectively without systemic absorption.
Why It Matters for the Ocean:
Nano-sized particles may be small enough to enter marine organisms, leading to bioaccumulation and disruption of coral and plankton health. Non-nano options are less likely to be absorbed by marine life, making them safer for aquatic ecosystems.
How to Know What You’re Buying:
Look for “non-nano” clearly stated on the label
Avoid aerosol or spray sunscreens with zinc or titanium they often use nanoparticles for smoother delivery
Check for third-party test data when available
If you're choosing mineral sunscreen for the planet, make sure it’s non-nano your skin (and the sea) will thank you.
